Get oriented to the course, learn the basic definitions of and experiences that lead to trauma, and reflect on potential experiences of trauma with your youth.
Trauma not only affects the mind, but the body too. In this week we learn about the effects of trauma on the brain and body.
The central question answered in this module is, “how does trauma manifest over time and behaviorally with our youth?” Learn how to look for signs of traumatic experience and conceptualize via a trauma-informed lens.
In this week, lessons focus on what you can do to improve your professional skills to embody a trauma-informed professional; i.e., techniques for your youth, yourself, how to generally operate from a trauma-informed lens, and how to work with triggered trauma when it arises in the moment.
At the end of the 4th week of this course, a live webinar will be held in order to review course material and ask live questions. This is optional. This will be recorded and a replay will be sent to anyone who cannot make the webinar live. Note: time watching the live webinar or the recording of the live webinar is not eligible for CE credits and does not count toward overall CE for eligible professionals
Content Access
This is technically a 4-week online course. The way access to content works is that each week, that week’s content will become accessible. For example, during week 1, you have access to all of the lessons of week 1. You cannot skip ahead and complete all of the coursework in that first week. You can always catch up if you’re behind (e.g., complete week 1’s lesson during week 2).
Certificate of Completion
While lifetime access is granted for course participants, obtaining your certificate of completion can only be done by completing all lessons and taking and passing the mid-term and final quiz, and filling out the course evaluation. After the 4th week, there is a 2-week grace period to finish all lessons and above mentioned coursework to obtain your certificate of completion. When finished with all above lessons, your certificate of completion will be available for download in your course dashboard.
Trauma-Informed Care for Professionals Working with Youth is a completely online, semi self-paced, and affordable course designed to teach education, mental health, probation, and any other professionals working with young people the basics of a trauma-informed approach: What trauma is, how to identify it, and some basic action steps to engage trauma skillfully. This course is 4-weeks long with a start and stop date, and a 2-week grace period to fulfill all requirements (all lessons, quizzes, and evaluations) to get a certificate of completion.
Sam Himelstein, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist (PSY25229) based in Oakland, CA. He has worked in juvenile halls, chemical dependency settings, schools, outpatient hospitals, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, in community settings, and in private practice with teens and their families. Dr. Himelstein is an author of multiple scholarly journal articles and three books, travels the country speaking at conferences and conducting professional trainings, and is the founder and president of the Center for Adolescent Studies. He is passionate about training professionals from multiple disciplines in creating authentic, healing relationships with adolescents that contribute to positive outcomes. A formerly incarcerated youth himself, Dr. Himelstein was privileged to change his life from a path of drugs, violence, crime, and self-destruction to that of healing and transformation. His mission is to help young people become aware of the power of self-awareness and transformation, and train professionals with similar interests. American Psychological Association (APA)
8 continuing education (CE) credits for psychologists in the United States. The Center for Adolescent Studies is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor CE for psychologists. The Center for Adolescent Studies maintains responsibility for all programs and its content. The State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts CE from APA sponsors for LMFTs, LEPs, LPCs, and LCSWs. Learn more here. The Center for Adolescent Studies Inc. (1640) is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. The Center for Adolescent Studies Inc. maintains responsibility for the program. ACE Approval Period: (July ’18 – July ‘19). There is also a 2-week grace period following the last week (9/11 – 9/25) to finish all lessons, complete the midterm and final quizzes, and fill out the course evaluation in order to obtain your certificate of completion. After that, you will have lifetime access to the course material but a certificate of completion will not be available.
